Cape Town Itinerary: The Perfect 6 Days (2026)

Cape Town needs a rental car — the city, the peninsula, and the winelands are three separate trips stitched together by road. This 6-day route gives you all three plus room for the weather to reshuffle your Table Mountain day.

When to go to Cape Town

November to March for beach + wine country weather. Whale season is June to November. Winter (June–August) is green, quiet, and rainy.

Typical daily budget for a mid-range traveler in 2026: R1,500–3,000/day (~$85–170). Prices below assume shoulder season; peak summer runs 20–40% higher, especially on lodging.

Getting around Cape Town

Rent a car (drive on the left, mostly easy). Uber is safe and cheap inside the city. MyCiTi bus covers a few tourist routes. Do NOT walk between neighborhoods at night.

Where to stay in Cape Town

V&A Waterfront for family-friendly convenience. Sea Point / Green Point for restaurants + safe walking. Camps Bay for beach base (pricier).

Day 1: Table Mountain + City Bowl

Table Mountain cable car first slot (weather is everything — reshuffle if it's clouded in), Company's Garden, Bo-Kaap walk, Long Street.

Day 2: Cape Peninsula Drive

Chapman's Peak Drive, Boulders Beach (penguins), Cape of Good Hope + Cape Point, Simon's Town for lunch. Full day, drop-dead scenery.

Day 3: Winelands (Stellenbosch + Franschhoek)

Drive to Stellenbosch (45 min), 2–3 wineries, lunch on a farm, drive back via Franschhoek. Have a designated driver or book a wine tour van.

Day 4: V&A + Robben Island

Robben Island ferry (book weeks ahead), Zeitz MOCAA at the V&A, harbor lunch, kite-boarding watching at Bloubergstrand for the postcard Table Mountain shot.

Day 5: Kirstenbosch + Constantia

Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden morning + tree-canopy walk, Groot Constantia wine estate for lunch, beach or spa afternoon.

Day 6: Whale Coast Day Trip

Drive to Hermanus (1h30) in whale season, otherwise Betty's Bay for penguins + tidal pools. Back for dinner at The Test Kitchen Fledgelings.

What to eat in Cape Town

The Pot Luck Club for tapas + view. Kloof Street House for classic. La Colombe (Constantia) for a splurge. Truth Coffee for the industrial roastery experience.

Best day trip from Cape Town

Whale coast (above) or the West Coast National Park in wildflower season (Aug–Sep).
