Istanbul Itinerary: The Perfect 5 Days (2026)
Istanbul is two continents, three empires, and a food culture that doesn't quit. Five days lets you cross the Bosphorus a few times and see both the postcard mosques and the neighborhoods where locals actually live.
When to go to Istanbul
April, May, September, October. Summer is hot; winter is grey but atmospheric. Ramadan changes the rhythm — plan around iftar.
Typical daily budget for a mid-range traveler in 2026: $60–110/day (highly variable with lira). Prices below assume shoulder season; peak summer runs 20–40% higher, especially on lodging.
Getting around Istanbul
Get an Istanbulkart at any metro station — it covers metro, tram, bus, ferry, and funicular. Ferries across the Bosphorus are transit and sightseeing at once. Ubers exist but taxis + BiTaksi app are more common.
Where to stay in Istanbul
Sultanahmet for first-timers wanting walking distance to the icons. Karaköy or Cihangir for hipper + more locals. Kadıköy (Asian side) for the real Istanbul food scene.
Day 1: Sultanahmet Icons
Hagia Sophia at opening, Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace, Basilica Cistern. Long day — reward yourself with dinner in Karaköy.
Day 2: Bazaars + Süleymaniye
Grand Bazaar (haggle, don't take the first price), Spice Bazaar, Süleymaniye Mosque for the best skyline view, ferry to Kadıköy for dinner.
Day 3: Bosphorus Ferry + Ortaköy
Public ferry up the Bosphorus (skip the tourist cruise — same view for 1/10 the price), lunch in Bebek, back to Ortaköy for waterfront kumpir.
Day 4: Kadıköy + Moda
Full day on the Asian side. Kadıköy market, fish sandwich lunch, Moda seafront walk, dinner at Çiya Sofrası.
Day 5: Princes' Islands Day Trip
Ferry to Büyükada (1h), rent a bike, seafood lunch, back by evening.
What to eat in Istanbul
Çiya Sofrası for regional Anatolian. Karaköy Güllüoğlu for baklava. Karaköy Lokantası for lunch. Any random balık ekmek stand at Eminönü.
Best day trip from Istanbul
Princes' Islands (above). Alternative: Belgrade Forest for a proper day out in nature, or Şile on the Black Sea coast in summer.
