Lisbon Itinerary: The Perfect 5 Days (2026)

Lisbon is a hill workout with a soundtrack. Comfortable shoes matter more than a packed itinerary. This 5-day plan builds in views, ferries, and one Sintra day without pretending the tram-28 crush isn't a tourist trap.

When to go to Lisbon

March to May and late September to October — warm sun, cool evenings, no crowds. July and August are hot and packed.

Typical daily budget for a mid-range traveler in 2026: €80–140/day. Prices below assume shoulder season; peak summer runs 20–40% higher, especially on lodging.

Getting around Lisbon

Viva Viagem card + zapping (€0.50 per €5 top-up) covers metro, trams, funiculars, and ferries. Ubers are cheap. Skip renting a car unless you're going to the Alentejo.

Where to stay in Lisbon

Príncipe Real for stylish + central. Alfama for atmosphere (steep stairs, no elevators). Chiado for shopping-adjacent convenience.

Day 1: Alfama + Fado

São Jorge Castle first, then walk down through Alfama's stairways. Miradouro de Santa Luzia for the view. Fado dinner at Mesa de Frades.

Day 2: Baixa + Chiado + Bairro Alto

Praça do Comércio, Elevador de Santa Justa (walk up to skip the queue), Chiado shopping, ginjinha stop, sunset drinks in Bairro Alto.

Day 3: Belém

Tram 15 to Belém. Jerónimos Monastery, Pastéis de Belém, MAAT museum, sunset at the Tower.

Tip: Buy the Jerónimos ticket online — the on-site queue is often 90+ minutes.

Day 4: LX Factory + Time Out Market

Slow morning at LX Factory (Ler Devagar bookshop, brunch), tram to Time Out Market for a curated tasting lunch, siesta, sunset at Miradouro da Graça.

Day 5: Sintra Day Trip

Train from Rossio (40 min). Pena Palace + Quinta da Regaleira in one day is aggressive but doable — book Pena for the first slot and Quinta for late afternoon.

What to eat in Lisbon

Cervejaria Ramiro for seafood (queue at 6:30pm). Manteigaria for the best pastéis de nata. Prado for farm-to-table. A Cevicheria for the Peruvian-Portuguese crossover.

Best day trip from Lisbon

Sintra is the obvious pick (above). For a stronger alternative: Cascais + Cabo da Roca by train and bus makes a coastal day with fewer palaces and more Atlantic wind.
