Peru Itinerary: 7 Days Across the Country (2026)

Peru in 7 days is Lima → Cusco → Sacred Valley → Machu Picchu. Skip the temptation to add Amazon or Nazca on a short trip — altitude alone will eat a day. This route builds in acclimatization so you don't spend Machu Picchu with a headache.

When to go to Peru

May to September (dry season in the Andes) for Machu Picchu + the Sacred Valley. November to April is rainy in the mountains but green.

Typical daily budget for a mid-range traveler in 2026: $80–180/day (Machu Picchu bumps it up). Prices below assume shoulder season; peak summer runs 20–40% higher, especially on lodging.

Getting around Peru

Fly Lima → Cusco (1h15). Sacred Valley by private driver or colectivo. Train to Machu Picchu from Ollantaytambo (PeruRail or Inca Rail).

Where to stay in Peru

Lima: Miraflores or Barranco. Cusco: San Blas for atmosphere, or start in the lower Sacred Valley (Urubamba) for gentler altitude.

Day 1: Lima — Miraflores + Barranco

Larcomar cliffs, walk along the Malecón, Barranco street art + Bridge of Sighs, dinner at Isolina or Central (if you booked 3 months out).

Day 2: Fly to Cusco → Sacred Valley

Morning flight, transfer straight down to Urubamba/Ollantaytambo (lower altitude = easier first night). Rest, coca tea.

Day 3: Sacred Valley — Pisac + Ollantaytambo

Pisac market + ruins morning, Ollantaytambo ruins afternoon, overnight in Ollantaytambo.

Day 4: Machu Picchu

Early train to Aguas Calientes, bus up, guided tour (mandatory), afternoon return.

Day 5: Cusco — City Day

Train back to Cusco, Plaza de Armas, Qorikancha, San Blas walk, Chinchero on the way if time.

Day 6: Cusco — Rainbow Mountain or Sacsayhuamán

Rainbow Mountain is a full brutal day at 5,200m (do only if fully acclimatized). Softer alternative: Sacsayhuamán + Cusco museums + a cooking class.

Day 7: Fly to Lima + Departure

Morning flight, last long lunch in Barranco, night flight home.

What to eat in Peru

Lima: Central, Maido (both need booking months ahead). Isolina for a proper long lunch. Cusco: Cicciolina, Chicha, Green Point for vegetarian.

Best day trip from Peru

From Cusco: Humantay Lake or Maras + Moray salt terraces (much softer than Rainbow Mountain).
