Rome Itinerary: The Perfect 5 Days (2026)

Rome rewards walking and punishes over-planning. This 5-day route front-loads the ancient sites while your legs are fresh, then eases into neighborhoods, food, and one Vatican morning.

When to go to Rome

April, May, and October — warm enough for a spritz at sunset, cool enough to walk. August is brutal (heat + closures). Christmas week is magical but book 3+ months out.

Typical daily budget for a mid-range traveler in 2026: €110–170/day. Prices below assume shoulder season; peak summer runs 20–40% higher, especially on lodging.

Getting around Rome

Historic center is walkable end-to-end in 40 minutes. Metro has just 3 lines but covers the big hits. Buses are useful but slow — avoid them at rush hour. Never rent a car.

Where to stay in Rome

Monti for cool + central. Trastevere for evening atmosphere (loud on weekends). Prati if you want quiet and easy Vatican access.

Day 1: Ancient Rome

Colosseum + Forum + Palatine on one combined ticket, first slot of the day. Lunch in Monti, then Capitoline Museums for the view over the Forum at golden hour.

Tip: The €24 combined ticket is only valid 24h — plan Palatine + Forum the same morning as the Colosseum.

Day 2: Vatican Morning, Trastevere Evening

Vatican Museums 8am entry, Sistine Chapel, then St. Peter's Basilica (free). Nap. Cross the river to Trastevere for dinner.

Day 3: Baroque Center Walk

Pantheon (free, arrive early), Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps — do this as one long loop with gelato breaks. Aperitivo at Salotto 42.

Day 4: Borghese & Villa

Galleria Borghese (timed entry, book 2 weeks ahead), then rent a bike in the Villa Borghese gardens. Sunset at the Pincio terrace.

Day 5: Testaccio & Appian Way

Testaccio market for breakfast, then bus or e-bike out to the Appian Way for catacombs and ancient road walking. Return for a long dinner in Testaccio (Flavio al Velavevodetto).

What to eat in Rome

Roscioli for carbonara. Pizzarium (near Vatican) for al taglio. Da Enzo al 29 for classic Trastevere (queue early). Gelateria del Teatro for pistachio.

Best day trip from Rome

Ostia Antica (30 min by regional train) is the underrated alternative to Pompeii — quieter, closer, and you still get an entire Roman city to yourself in the morning.
