Tokyo Itinerary: The Perfect 7 Days (2026)

Tokyo isn't a city — it's twenty stitched together. Seven days lets you go deep in three or four neighborhoods instead of skimming twenty. This route balances iconic and neighborhood, big meals and stand-up sushi counters.

When to go to Tokyo

Late March to early April for cherry blossoms (book 3+ months out) and late October to November for autumn foliage. Skip mid-June to mid-July rainy season.

Typical daily budget for a mid-range traveler in 2026: ¥18,000–28,000/day (~$120–190). Prices below assume shoulder season; peak summer runs 20–40% higher, especially on lodging.

Getting around Tokyo

Get a Suica or PASMO IC card and load it via Apple Wallet. Metro + JR trains handle 99% of what you'll need. Don't buy a JR Pass unless you're leaving Tokyo — it's rarely worth it for city-only trips.

Where to stay in Tokyo

Shinjuku for convenience + nightlife. Shibuya for young + central. Asakusa or Yanaka for traditional-feeling neighborhoods with easy access.

Day 1: Shibuya + Harajuku

Shibuya Crossing, Meiji Shrine, Takeshita Street, Omotesando architecture walk, dinner at a Nonbei Yokocho izakaya.

Day 2: Asakusa + Ueno

Senso-ji temple early, Nakamise shopping, Tokyo Skytree, Ueno Park + museums (pick one). Yanaka evening walk.

Day 3: Shinjuku + Golden Gai

Tokyo Metropolitan Building for the free skyline view, Isetan food hall for lunch, Shinjuku Gyoen park, Omoide Yokocho + Golden Gai for dinner + drinks.

Day 4: TeamLab + Odaiba

TeamLab Planets (book weeks ahead), Toyosu Market for sushi if you missed Tsukiji, Odaiba for the view of Rainbow Bridge.

Day 5: Ghibli + Kichijoji

Ghibli Museum (tickets release monthly, sell out in minutes), Inokashira Park, indie shops + jazz cafés in Kichijoji.

Day 6: Day Trip: Kamakura or Nikko

Kamakura (1h by JR) for the Great Buddha and coastal shrines. Nikko (2h by Tobu) for waterfalls and UNESCO shrines — longer but stunner.

Day 7: Tsukiji Outer Market + Ginza

Morning breakfast crawl at Tsukiji outer market, Hama-rikyu gardens, Ginza afternoon (Itoya stationery, Ginza Six), depachika dinner.

What to eat in Tokyo

Tsuta for ramen. Sushi Dai (Toyosu) or Daiwa Sushi. Tonkatsu Maisen in Aoyama. Any random standing-only soba counter near a JR station.

Best day trip from Tokyo

Kamakura is the easy answer (above). Hakone is a stronger day if you're chasing hot springs + Mt. Fuji views (2h by Odakyu, buy the Hakone Free Pass).
